Hobbs Chapel Burial Ground / Hobb's Family Graveyard located at Anchorage

This listing was sent to by Tim Jones.  It was acquired from the book, "Middletown's Days and Deeds; The Story of 150 Years of Living in an Old Kentucky Town".   A similar listing can be found in the "Wilderness Road Cemeteries in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia", as compiled by Robert Foster Johnson for the West-Central Kentucky Family Research Association in 1981.  This latter book can still be found by contacting the Association itself or McDowell Publications of Owensboro, Kentucky.   Please email your coordinator if you have any questions or other more recent information to add regarding this cemetery.

Located in eastern Jefferson County at Anchorage behind the Methodist Church.  According to Robert Foster Johnson, this cemetery has approximately 80 graves.  "This could be the most attractive old church-yard in the state.  The whole layout is a showpiece of the palmy days of Methodism.  The artistic brick walks are there, the front of the church is here, the church proper is gone.  One hundred yards to the rear lies the old cemetery, for whose construction no expense was spared.  The wall is special in makeup.  The graves are raised as a whole, one foot above surrounding earth and five great Methodist preachers are sleeping here.  This is holy ground, for Methodists.  The leading donors were the Hobbs, hence the name Hobb's Chapel.  The great maples and poplars make it a charming spot.  Wealth exudes."

Mr. Johnson also states that his work completes the Hobbs Chapel Burial Ground off Osage Road in Anchorage.  He also states that nearly all these people were related in some way.  As of 1981, the beautiful grounds were cared for by the Anchorage Garden Club.
