Our research library has a wealth of information for
family researchers.
Since we are no longer in the public library,
researchers will only be allowed in the
research library when a volunteer is on duty. If you are coming to Hopkins County, Kentucky to do
genealogical research, please make a note of the times our research library
is open and make arrangements to visit during the hours listed above.
This information about visitors to our library was
reported by President Jane Ann Jackson in August 2010:
♦ From January 1, 2010 to
July 31, 2010, we had 850+ signatures on our Guest Register
♦ 132 of
these signatures are one-time visitors from out of county or out of state
♦ We have had visitors from 17 states
(including Kentucky) so far this year
Here
are some of the great research resources we have:
Obituary Collection
Dedicated members have been clipping obituaries from
The Messenger
newspaper and storing them in notebooks since the 1970's. There are also some
obituaries from earlier years. Each notebook has an
index. Approximately 20,000 of these obituaries have been scanned to computer images
for easier use and we hope to have the entire collection digitized in the
future.
Families
Several of the books in our family collection are now out of print
and very difficult to find. This section of our library includes families
who still have many members in our county, family names that are less common
here, and families who are the descendents or ancestors of Hopkins County
families. Some of these family books are very rare and were purchased at
great cost.
Some of our family books have been donated to us by the authors and we
encourage authors of family histories with a Hopkins County, Kentucky
connection to consider a tax-deductable donation to our library.
Hopkins County
We have a large number of research references books about our
county including cemetery records, censuses, school annuals, legal records,
and histories of the county, towns, churches, and other groups.
Kentucky
This section includes books, society quarterly publications, and
records of various kinds from nearly every Kentucky county, with emphasis on
the nearby counties.
Periodicals
Our large collection of periodical publications from
genealogical and historical societies in Kentucky and other states often have extremely valuable information not found
elsewhere.
Other States
We have genealogical publications about nearly every state. This
includes the states Hopkins County families came from, such as North
Carolina and Virginia; and states Hopkins County families moved to such as
Illinois, Missouri, and even Texas. Like our other books, many of these were
purchased several years ago and are now out of print and hard to find.
Microfilm Collection
A few of the many types of information available on microfilm or microfiche in our
library:
♦ Indexes to Kentucky births on microfiche.
♦ Censuses and tax lists for Hopkins County, Kentucky and
several other counties in Kentucky.
♦ List of some Kentucky births and deaths records before 1911.
Our library has so many genealogy research resources that
we could not possibly name them all.
