Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. WITHERSPOON FAMILY. An early settler of Kentucky was Robert Witherspoon, a native of Virginia, who settled in Franklin County, near the forks of the Elkhorn, about eight miles from Frankfort. He married a Miss Sallie Johnson, and died, leaving six children, as follows: Susan (Mrs. Scott), Lewis J., Nancy (Mrs. Christopher Lee), John, Fannie (Mrs. James Harrod) and Johnson, who died unmarried. Lewis J., the eldest son, was born in Franklin County, November 22, 1800, and married Ellender Lillard, who was a daughter of Ephraim and Margaret (Prayther) Lillard, and who died March 9, 1842, leaving seven children: John A., William H. (died June 2, 1883), Martha (Mrs. J.H.D. McKee), Mary E. (died May 20, 1850), Ambrose (died in 1841), William H. (died August 11, 1874) and James F. Mr. Witherspoon next married August 17, 1843, Martha Lillard, a sister of his deceased wife, and by this marriage had five children: Ann M. (died December 17, 1846), Newton H., Lister, Ellen J. (died Jun 7, 1848) and Mary P. (died in 1853). Dr. Lewis J. received a common-school education. He then studied medicine at Bloomfield, Ky., and afterward settled in Lawrenceburg, following his profession there. He was the first county surveyor of Anderson County. Dr. Witherspoon was also engaged in managing his farms, which at the time of his death amounted to about 1,200 acres. He died in 1852. Dr. John A., his eldest son, was born December 11, 1829, in Anderson County. His early education was received at the Kentucky Military Institute, of Franklin County. He then commenced the study of medicine with his father, and graduated at the Jefferson Medical College, of Philadelphia, Penn., in 1852. He then connected himself with his father and uncle, and at the death of his father engaged in business with his uncle, Dr. John Witherspoon. In 1860 his uncle retired, and he formed a connection with Dr. J. R. Chambers. In 1866 he engaged in the banking business with his uncle, Dr. John Witherspoon, under the firm name of J. & J. A. Witherspoon. In 1874 he was elected president of the bank, which position he now holds. Mr. Witherspoon is also extensively engaged in farming, and owns about 700 acres. He married, April 20, 1859, Miss Mary P., daughter of Judge Robert A. McKee, of Missouri, and who died February 1, 1885, leaving seven children: Ellen L. (Mrs. Charles Bond), Clarence A., Alice A. (Mrs. Rhodes Thomas), Emma A., Ambrose H., Robert H. and Nettie (died August 1, 1876). Mr. Witherspoon is a Master Mason of Anderson Lodge, No. 90.
