Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. THE VANDEGRAFF FAMILY. Abraham Sebastian Vandegraff, son of William J. and Agnita (Samlandt) Vandegraff, was born in Ceylon (where his father was governor) December 21, 1762. He took his degree both at Leiden and Amsterdam, Holland, in 1785, and after serving as secretary of the government of Ceylon (which office he resigned to accept a regency in the city of Dordrecht) immigrated to the United States, and landed at Philadelphia in 1798; moved to Kentucky in 1800, and settled in Scott County. In 1801 he married "Pretty Jane" as she was called, daughter of Capt. Andrew Steele, from which marriage were born William Jacob, March 31, 1802; John, February, 1804; Agnita, January 5, 1810, and Cornelia Anna, April 25, 1812. William moved to Gainsville where he married Juliette Ewing, and rose to eminence in the profession of the law. John was a noted civil engineer, and helped to build the Louisville & Lexington Railroad, the first railroad built in Kentucky. He died young. Cornelia married E. Troye, the famous animal painter and now resides in Alabama. Agnita married William B. Fleming, a son of Leonard J. Fleming, of Woodford County, Ky., June 2, 1827. To this union were born Leonard J. Fleming, who died in Woodford County in 1875; Abram S. Fleming, who died while a student in college, and William B. Fleming, who is a lawyer in Louisville, and was appointed a member of the supreme bench in the Territory of New Mexico, but declined to hold the place. Abraham Sebastian Vandegraff was a most scholarly man, and left numerous historical and philosophical manuscripts behind him. He died on his farm in Scott County, October 2, 1832. The only descendants bearing the Vandegraff name are his great-grandson Sebastian, now living at Livingston, Ala., and another wild but brilliant grandson, now residing at New Orleans.
