Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. ROBERT H. KINNAIRD, born in Lancaster, Garrard County, July 25, 1839, is the third son of James and ELiza (Hahn) Kinnaird. James Kinnaird, born in Scotland in February, 1795, immigrated to the United States when seventeen years of age, and settled first in New Orleans, where he was engaged in merchandising for about a year. After suffering a severe attack of yellow fever he removed to Kentucky, locating in Garrard County, where he soon after began trading with Mexico, taking his goods overland. After suffering many hardships and meeting with many strange adventures he finally abandoned this line of business within two years, and settled down in the dry goods trade in Lancaster, Ky., where he remained until 1849, when he removed to Danville, then the principal seat of learning in the State, for the purpose of educating his children, who were all sons. Here he became president of the Central Kentucky Bank, which office he held up to within a short time of his death, which occurred in January, 1881. It was while living in Garrard County that he married Eliza Hahn, whose death occurred in 1876. Robert H. Kinnaird entered Centre College, and was graduated in the class of 1858. Soon after he began the study of the ministry in Danville Theological Seminary, and first began preaching at Fort Madison, Iowa, where he remained three years. Receiving a call from the Presbyterian Church at Cynthiana, Ky., he returned to his native State and preached at the last named place one year. From Cynthiana he was called to Missouri where he preached for about eighteen months; he went thence to Raymond, Miss., where he labored one year, when, having a call from the church at Midway, Ky., he removed to that place in 1871, and has remained there since, now about sixteen years. He was married, October 16, 1866, to Miss Mary E. Martin, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., daughter of Hon. Joshua L. Martin, ex-governor of the State, but who was a native of Tennessee. Mrs. Kinnaird's mother was Miss Sarah A. Mason, a native of Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Kinnaird are the parents of the following named children: Margaret R., ELiza, Carrie, Robert and Sarah. All the family are members of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Kinnaird has a beautiful farm of 140 acres lying on the turnpike near Mr. W. Viley.
