Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. HON. JOHN JESSE was born in Woodford County in 1842, and is the son of Reuben and Jane (Steele) Jesse, both natives of Woodford County and both now deceased. John H. Jesse was reared on the farm and was educated in the common and high schools of his neighborhood and Versailles. He continued the life of a farmer on his place a few miles east of Versailles up to the time of his death, in July, 1885. He was married, in 1866, to Miss Sallie E. Stevenson, daughter of James R. and Caroline (Elliott) Stevenson, both natives of Woodford County. The Stevenson family were among the earliest settlers in the Pisgah neighborhood, having settled in the county as soon as the Indian depredations permitted life outside a fort. James Elliott, the grandfather of Mrs. Jesse, was also a native of Woodford County, and one of the older citizens. In 1883 Mr. Jesse was elected a representative in the Lower House of the Kentucky State Legislature, and after serving two years was again nominated for the same position for the election of August, 1885, but before the election occurred Mr. Jesse died. He was a most genial companion, a free dispenser of hospitalities and a man of many popular characteristics. Had he not died so young he might have served his State and county in a more enlarged capacity. He left four children: Carrie, Henry, Joseph and William.
