HAWKINS, born September 30, 1840, on the farm on which he still resides in Woodford County, is the only son of Senat A. and Mary (Dodd) Hawkins. S. A. Hawkins was also born in Woodford County, February 19, 1810, was a merchant and farmer, a justice of the peace one term, and also constable several years. Mrs. Mary Hawkins was born in Mercer County near the mouth of the Shawnee Creek, and died May 9, 1842; her husband survived until 1855. James Hawkins, the father of S. A., was a native of Virginia. James S. Hawkins, in July, 1862, enlisted in Company E., Second Kentucky Cavalry; was under Morgan; was wounded in the shoulder at Cynthiana in 1863, and in the side and right hand at Bull's Gap. He surrendered with Gen. Taylor in Mississippi, April 15, 1865. In 1866 he opened a general store in Woodford County, which he relinquished September 25, 1879. In 1882 he formed a partnership at Wilmore, Jessamine County, has a general store there and deals largely in grain and coal. He also owns 365 acres in Woodford County, and is extensively engaged in stock raising and general farming. He married, December 16, 1879, Miss Dollie, daughter of John W. and Mary F. (Tiller) Reed of Jessamine County. Mr. Hawkins is a member of the I.O.O.F., Troy Lodge, No. 255, has filled all the chairs and is at present Grand Treasurer of the order; he also belongs to the Encampment at Versailles, and with his wife is a member of the Presbyterian Church.
