Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. JAMES C. GRAVES is the son of Reuben and Mary E. (Cox) Graves. The grandfather of James C., John Graves, was born in Culpeper County, Va., was married, in 1791, to Hannah, daughter of Richard Cave, a Baptist minister, and his wife, Elizabeth (Craig) Cave. The latter died in 1819, the mother of the following children: Absalom (deceased), Mary (deceased wife of S. D. Hanks, November 1886), Reuben, Judge Richard Cave Graves, of Woodford County (now in his eighty-fourth year), Bengarmen T. (deceased) and Joseph C. In 1821 John Graves married Elizabeth, daughter of Rev. George and Elizabeth Eve, second wife, who both died in 1823. Reuben Graves was born October 19, 1799, married Elizabeth Cox, and died May 27, 1842; his widow died April 17, 1871. The children born to this couple were Charles, William H., John, Thomas, Hannah, James C. and Hattie (Mrs. Charles Garnet, of Missouri). James C. Graves was born in Woodford County August 22, 1837, was reared a farmer, and is now engaged in raising saddle and trotting horses on his farm of 137 acres. He first married Miss Laura Gaddy, daughter of Thomas Gaddy, of Woodford County, Ky., who died in 1865; next he married Miss Mollie Huggins in 1868, who has borne him six children: Ollie, Laura M., Reuben (deceased), Earnest, Bessie and James Thomas Graves.
