GAY was born in Woodford County, June 11, 1823, and is the eldest son of James and Catherine (Claggett) Gay. James Gay, the father, was a soldier of the war of 1812, and went from Woodford County. (Mention of John T.'s paternal grandfather, John Gay, will be found in the sketch of John R. Gay, below.) John T. Gay's mother was the daughter of Thomas Claggett, of Virginia. Her parents were of English extraction. John T. was reared on the farm, and received a very good education at the Pisgah schools. He was married February 22, 1849, to Miss Sarah Brown, daughter of Tavner Brown, a farmer, of Woodford County, and a native of Virginia. They has nine children, viz.: Mary E., James, Lelia, John, Sallie, Anna T., Mattie, Minnie and Robert H.
