Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. JOHN W. CRENSHAW, M. D., was born in Amelia County, Va., June 24, 1848, and is a son of Thomas A. and Ann S. (Jeter) Crenshaw, natives, respectively, of Powhatan and Amelia County, Va., both families of Welsh origin. His ancestors came to Virginia from England during the reign of Charles II, settled in Charles City County. John W. Crenshaw remained on the home farm until he was eighteen years old, when he entered Bethany College, West Virginia, graduating from that institution in 1868, and at once embarked in the teacher's profession and continued about six years, in the meantime reading medicine. In 1874 he entered the medical department of the University of Virginia, graduating a year later, and then entered the Hospital for Ruptured and Crippled at New York, remaining there until 1877. He began practice in Christian County, Ky., in 1877, removed to Piatt County, Ill., in 1881, and in the following year located at Versailles, Ky., where he has successfully practiced since. He was married, June 24, 1885, to Miss Katie, daughter of Abner C. Hunter (deceased), of Woodford County. He is a member of the inter-collegiate fraternity Phi Kappa Psi.
