Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. LEWIS ALLEN was born May 3, 1809, and is the second son of Beverley and Elizabeth (Davis) Allen. Beverley Allen was born in Virginia, and was an early settler of Fayette County, Ky. Both grandfathers of Lewis Allen were natives of Virginia and both served in the Revolutionary war. Lewis Allen was born in Fayette County, and when a child was removed by his parents to Woodford County, where he was reared on the home farm, but afterward learned stone masonry and also engaged in farming and stock raising. In 1871 he was elected justice of the peace, and has ever since held the office, now serving his fourth term. His first marriage was on October 27, 1836, to Lucy, daughter of John and Elizabeth Dawson, of Woodford County. Mrs. Allen died in 1841, a member of the Methodist Church South, and the mother of two children: Elizabeth, married to D. Brandenburg, and James P., who married Gertie Walker. Mr. Allen's second marriage was to Sarah, daughter of Elijah and Sallie (Hughes) Rumsey, and to this union ten children have been born, of whom eight are living: Martha, wife of William H. Hitt; Mary A., wife of R. D. Gregory, Louic C., who married Sarah Veatch, and a Miss Carter; Emeline, wife of Felix Burton; Haden T.; Beverley B.; Alice married to James Balden, and Lucy, wife of John Veatch. Mr. and Mrs. Allen and all the children, excepting Louis C., are members of the Methodist Church South. Mr. Allen is a prosperous farmer and owns 160 acres in Clover Bottom precinct. His eldest son, James P., was under Gen. John Morgan during the civil war, and for eighteen months was a prisoner at Camp Douglas.
