Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Whitley County J.W. Harrah, a prominent druggist of Mount Sterling, Ky., was born in Montgomery County, Ky., July 2, 1839. His father was Daniel Harrah, also a native of Montgomery County, born in 1796. He married, January 19, 1829, Mary Moore, a native of Shenandoah County, Va., born August 27, 1806, and a daughter of Joseph and Julia A (Duck) Moore. Joseph Moore was born in Shenandoah County, Va., and was a son of Joseph and Roseno (Pennyweight) Moore. Daniel Harrah was a son of James and Elizabeth (Davis) Harrah, natives of Virginia, who came to Kentucky at an early day and settled in Fayette County. Daniel Harrah died in 1844, and for many years before his death was a strict member of the Presbyterian Church and a liberal contributor to all church and charitable organizations. His wife still survives him. J.W. Harrah was educated at the common schools, at Transylvania University, and at Centre College, Danville, Ky. He read law under Judge J.M. Moore, and was admitted to the bar. In September, 1861, he enlisted in the Confederate army at Cumberland Ford, in Capt. Stoner's company, but was afterward transferred to the First Kentucky Battalion Mounted Infantry. At the close of the war he commenced the druggist's business, and has been a very successful druggist ever since. Politically he is Democratic.
