Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Whitley County Jasper T. Freeman, President of the Bank of Williamsburg, Whitley County, Ky., was born in Pulaski County, Ky., January 8, 1842. His father, Seth Freeman, a native of Buncombe County, N.C., was born in October, 1807; he followed farming all his life and settled in Pulaski County, Ky., in 1833, where he lived until in September, 1852, when he removed to Whitley County, where he spent the remainder of his days. He was a member of the Baptist Church. His wife, Elizabeth (Davis) Freeman, was a native of the same State and county as her husband, and was the mother of fourteen children, viz: Rachel, Irwin, Mary, Jasper T., Temple, Julian, James M., Martha, Josie, John C., Anderson S., Mahala and two infants. Jasper T. Freeman was reared in Whitley County, whither he was taken by his parents when ten years of age; he was educated in the common schools. In 1861 he enlisted in the Federal army, Company G, Seventh Kentucky Infantry, under command of Col. Garrard, and served until October, 1864, participating in several of the principal battles. He then returned home and engaged in the mercantile business until 1876, when he sold out and has since been farming and trading in stock and lumber. He has also been a large mail contractor for the past few years. He is an extensive land-holder in Whitley County, and is one of the leading men. He was made president of the bank of Williamsburg when it was organized in 1885, and is one of its largest stockholders. April 16, 1866 he married Charity A., daughter of Marcellus and Mary (Renfrow) Moss, af [sic] Bell County. They have two children: George M. and Nellie. Mr. Freeman is a member of the Christian Church, and a Republican. In 1873 he was elected from Whitley County to the Legislature, and served one term. In 1885 he made an active race for the same office from Whitley and Knox Counties, but was defeated my a small majority, as he was for Prohibition.
