Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Wayne County Hon. L.D. Parker was born in Wayne County, KY., August 22, 1834, a son of Lewis and Matilda (Lockett) Parker. Lewis Parker was a native of New York, born in 1797 or 1798, and when about twenty years of age settled in Hardin County, Ky., with his parents. He was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church for twelve or fourteen years and was a member of the Kentucky Conference. He was subsequently a miller and farmer and local preacher. He was chaplain in the Twelfth Kentucky Federal Infantry for some time, and served as magistrate of his county two or three terms. He was one of the best known and most influential men in southern Kentucky, and died in 1863. He was a son of Stiles Parker, also a native New York, who was a Presbyterian minister. Mrs. Matilda Parker, a native of Kentucky, was a daughter of William Lockett, who was a stone-mason by trade; she died in 1867, having been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for many years. L.D. Parker received a good common-school education, and in 1853 became a Methodist preacher, and was a member of the Kentucky Conference until 1877. He read law and was admitted to the bar in 1878. In 1881 he was elected to the Legislature, was re-elected in 1883, and while serving in that body was a member of the special committee to investigate the affairs of the Anchorage Asylum. He has since devoted his time to the practice of the legal profession. In October, 1857, he married Permelia A. Tomlinson, of Somerset, Ky., a daughter of John Tomlinson. Of the four children born to their union only one is living. Cora, who was educated at Wesleyan Female College, Cincinnati, Oh., is a graduate of the School of Design, of the Cincinnati University, and is now the teacher of art in the State University at Lawrence, Kansas. With her mother she is a member of the Methodist Church. Mr. Parker is a Royal Arch Mason, and is one of a family of eleven children, viz: J.W. R., Eliza L., Mary E., Sallie N., James K., L.D., Elisha F., Lewis R., Marshall E., Eva and Lucy.
