WHALIN was born in Butler County (this State) October 16, 1830, and is a son of John and Nancy (Smith) Whalin, natives of Virginia. The former came to this State with his parents when but a small boy, and settled on Green River, in Butler County, and a few years later his father moved into Warren County. Subject lived with his father until of age, receiving the benefits of such schooling as was afforded by the schools of the neighborhood. When grown he was engaged on the river for eight or ten years as engineer on a steamboat. He then learned the blacksmith's trade and has followed it ever since.
