KIRBY was born September 3, 1850, in Warren County, Ky., and is a son of David and Lydia (Bohannon) Kirby, whose sketch appears above. J. R. Kirby was reared on a farm, and received a good common English education. At the age of twenty-two years he commenced life for himself by hiring out on a farm for three months; he then taught three months, and later entered the Kentucky University, at Lexington, from the commercial department of which he graduated. After his return home he taught school for fifteen months. February 2, 1875, he was united in marriage with Mina Royalty, of Warren County, and partially reared in Glasgow, Ky. She was a daughter of Henry and Mina (Wright) Royalty. Henry Royalty was born and reared in Lincoln County, Ky. In April, 1815, with his mother he moved to Simpson County, Ky., whre he engaged in farming; thence he moved to Russellville, and thence to Bowling Green. About 1855 he moved to Glasgow or vicinity, where he engaged in farming until the war broke out, when he embarked in the hotel business. After his wife's death, in 1866, he moved to Hopkinsville and entered the grocery business, and in 1869 he married his second wife, Mrs. Mary A. West. In 1873 he located near Smith's Grove and engaged in farming. He died in May, 1882. He was a son of Henry Royalty, who was born in Virginia; he was a soldier in the war of 1812; came to Lincoln County, Ky., when young; married Miss Sophia Hite, and died of black-measles at New Orleans. He was of Scotch-Irish descent. Mr. and Mrs. Kirby have had born to them five children, three now living: Grace, Mabel and Lenore. Mr. Kirby and wife are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. After his marriage he located north of Smith's Grove and engaged in farming. In 1880 he came to where he now resides, one mile south of Smith's Grove, on 200 acres, all in a high state of cultivation, and improved with a fine brick residence, good barn and out-buildings. He makes a speciality of breeding Morgan horses. Mr. Kirby is an active, wide-awake and prosperous farmer. In politics he is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for Horace Greeley.
