GOODE, a substantial and representative farmer of Warren County, was born February 6, 1845, in Warren County, Ky. He is a son of Samuel V. and Elizabth A. (Taylor) Goode, natives of Virginia and North Carolina, respectively. Samuel Goode was born in 1791, and was a son of John C. Goode, who married Dorothy Venable (a sketch of these appears above). Samuel V. Goode's great-grandfather, Robert Goode, was born in Virginia in 1745, and married a Miss Mackerness, of Virginia. Robert Goode in turn was a son of Samuel Goode, of Virginia, who married Mrs. John Burwell. Samuel Goode was a farmer, and son of Samuel Goode, who married Martha Jones, and were both of Virginia. Samuel Goode, first, was a son of John Goode, who was born in the north of England in 1620. In 1643 he emigrated to the Barabadoes [sic] Island. In 1650 he immigrated to Virginia, and settled four miles from Richmond, where he died in 1709. He had married a Miss Mackerness on the Barbadoes Island. This lady accompanied him to Virginia, and after her death he married Ann Bennett, of Virginia, by whom thirteen children were born. She died in 1708. John Goode was a devout and profound Christian, and once indicted a man before the grand jury for not attending church. The Goode family of America sprang from Richard Goode, of England. Samuel V. Goode received a good English education. Possessing a patriotic spirit he enlisted, in November, 1861, in Company E, Eleventh Kentucky Infantry. He was one of the youngest members of the regiment, and was always ready for duty, except for a few days when he was suffering from a wound received at Stone River. He was discharged as corporal in December, 1864, returned home, and immediately entered Bethel College, and commenced teaching in 1866. In 1870 he went to Labette County, Kas., where he remained two years as teacher and superintendent. He then returned to Warren County and continued teaching till 1880. In 1881 he was appointed store-keeper and gauger, but resigned in July, 1885. He next located where he now resides, on twenty-five acress, in 1878. He also owns 160 acres in Labette County, Kas. He was married, March 10, 1870, to Mary L. Conkin, of Warren County, Ky., a daughter of Ranson and Lettie (Bevil) Conkin, natives of Kentucky and Virginia, respectively. Mr. and Mrs. Goode have had born to this union four children: William H., Lettie E., Lela and Belva L. Mr. and Mrs. Goode are members of the Christian Church, and he is a member of the F. & A. M., and was also a member of the Grange in its day. In politics he is a Republican, and cast his first presidential vote for Gen. Grant.
