Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Warren County. SIDNEY W. FRANCIS was born May 11, 1839, in Allen County, Ky., where he grew to manhood. At the age of twenty-six years he removed to Warren County and located near Green Hill, where he resided until 1881, when he removed to his present home. His father, James A. Francis, was born in 1808, in Stokes County, N. C., and at the age of four years was brought by his parents to Kentucky, and located in Barren County. Frederick Francis, the grandfather of Sidney W., was also born in North Carolina, and was of English descent. James A. Francis married, about 1831, Elizabeth, daughter of Ephraim and Rhoda (Clayton) Berry. From this union sprang Bethuel, Milton, James R. (deceased), Sidney W., Katie A. (Sears), Mary (Sears) and Enoch. Sidney W. married, August 30, 1864, Sarah J., daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth (Robinson) Claypool. To them have been born Elizabeth (Hurt), Myrtle and Hettie. By industry, and in spite of having lost all his property by the war, Mr. Francis has become the owner of over 250 acres of well-improved and productive land, and in a good state of cultivation. He began life at farming, in which he spent some time; afterward engaged in the dry goods business, since ceasing which he has engaged in dealing in leaf tobacco, as well as farming. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and is also a member of the I. O. O. F., and of the Baptist Church. In politics he is a Democrat.
