SAMUEL BUCHANAN, Russell County, is a native of North Carolina.  He was 
born in 1832, and is a son of Walter and Elizabeth (Paschal) Buchanan, 
of English origin.  His grandparents on both sides immigrated to 
Kentucky, and settled in Shakertown about 1851.  He became a member of 
the Shaker family, or was indentured a few weeks after coming among 
them, and has been a member since.  He is now the head of the Second 
Order, or West Division, of the society, and superintends the temporal 
business thereof.
