Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Warren County. BENJAMIN F. BLACK was born in Amherst County, Va., and is a son of Madison Black, also a native of Virginia. When between nine and ten years of age, he moved with his father to Kerr's Creek, Rockbridge Co., Va., where he remained until near the age of twenty-five. He was reared on a farm. In March, 1862, he entered the Confederate Army, in Turner Ashby's Calvary; served under Stonewall Jackson, and was with Gen. Lee when he surrendered at Appomattox in 1865. Mr. Black married Eliza O., daughter of John Hayslett, of this county; she died leaving two children: Avonia L. and Robert E. Lee. After remaining a widower three years, Mr. Black married Nancy E., daughter of Edward Hix. They have one child - Mary E. Mr. Black is a Methodist and a Democrat; his first wife was a Methodist; this present wife is a Baptist.
