Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Warren County. JAMES P. BATES was born April 7, 1841, in Barren County, Ky. After various removals, in 1867 he located in Warren County, where, with the exception of two years spent in Texas, he has since resided. He was during the war for about twelve months a member of the First Kentucky Brigade, and for about the same length of time of the Second Missouri Cavalry. His father, Col. James P. Bates, was born in 1810, in Wilson County, Va. He was a lawyer and represented Barren County for three terms in the Legislature of his native State. He was also elected State superintendent of schools, but was removed after one year's service on account of his political views. He was a son of Reuben Bates, who was also a native of Virginia, a farmer and carpenter and of English descent. Col. James P. Bates was married about 1834 to Harriet F., daughter of Russell and Mary A. (Cooney) Barrick. From this union sprang Virginia (Edmonds), WIlliam R., James P., John W., George, Edward and Frank. James P. Bates' marriage took place December 20, 1869, with George A., daughter of George W. and Mary (Kelly) Isbell. To them have been born Claude and Earle. Mr. Bates has had "to hoe his own row" through life, but has always provided a comfortable support for his family. He is a believer in the docrines of the Methodist Church, but is not connected with any religious denominations. Politically he is a staunch Democrat.
