Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Trimble Co. JOHN W. CAMPBELL was born in Carrollton, Ky., October 24, 1847. His father Elisha B. Campbell, was born about 1817, in what is now Trimble County, a son of Jacob Campbell, a native of Scotland. He immigrated to America with two brothers, Matthew and John, in 1809, and settled in what is now Trimble County, near the present location of Providence Church. Elisha B. married in 1850, Nannie B. Haydon, a daughter of Blan B. and Martha (Dean) Haydon, natives, respectively, of Virginia and Pennsylvania. Blan B. Haydon was born in Virginia, immigrated to Kentucky about 1796, and settled at Port William, now Carrollton. Elisha was a cabinet-maker by trade, but did not devote much time to it. He was very popular, socially and politically, and served as sheriff of Carroll County three terms under the old constitution. He was own cousin to Alexander Campbell, the founder of the Christian Church. He died in 1852, leaving one child, our subject, and in 1859 his widow married Frank B. Dennisston, a lawyer of Philadelphia, to whom she bore one child, James M., who died in infancy. Mr. Dennisston died in 1864, while in the Federal service. His widow still survives. Our subject was reared in Louisville and educated at Ghent College, in Carroll County. After completing his studies he taught the Mount Bird High School near Milton until 1879, when he was appointed clerk in the war department of the United States Government. That position he held until 1885. In 1886 he moved to where he now resides in Trimble County, where he has 100 acres of land, and is engaged in farming and teaching. September 11, 1874, he married Nannie B. Dortch, daughter of John B. and Nancy (Blount) Dortch, of Clarksville, Tenn. To this union were born two daughters and two sons: Dennisston, Mary H., Dortch and Thomas H. (the last died in infancy). The family are members of the Christian Church. Mr. Campbell is a member of the I.O.O.F. and K. of P. In 1862, when but fourteen years of age, he enlisted in the Confederate Army in the Fourth Kentucky Cavalry, Col.
