Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Trimble Co. JAMES W. BELL, proprietor of the Bell Hotel, Bedford, was born in Trimble County, October 24, 1844, the eldest of ten children born to John and Katherine (Martin) Bell. John Bell was a son of John and Sarah (Bergins) Bell, natives of Virginia. Katherine Martin was a daughter of James and Leah (Powell) Martin, natives of North Carolina, but early settlers of Kentucky. John Bell, Sr., came to Kentucky and settled in Trimble County at an early date. He reared a family of nine children--one daughter and eight sons. John, Jr., his sixth child, was reared on a farm in Trimble County. He followed farming all his life, and died October 5, 1884, at the advanced aged of sixty-seven years. His widow still survives him, and is upward of sixty years of age. Our subject was reared on the farm, and devoted his whole time to agricultural pursuits until 1879. At that time he moved to Bedford, and engaged in the hotel business, where he still remains, and is now manager and owner of the leading hotel in Bedford. October 16, 1867, he married Eliza Clem, daughter of John and Nancy (Dunn) Clem, of Carroll County, Ky. Two children were born to their union: Dora L. and Charley A. Mr. Bell was elected jailer in 1882, and served as such until 1886. He is a member of the F. & A. M. fraternity. Politically he is a Democrat.
