He is the fourth child of a family of eight born to Samuel and Charlotte W. (Rowlette) McKinney. At about the age of three years he was brought with his parents to Kentucky. In 1837 his father, in company with Mr. Terry, engaged in merchandising in Wallonia, and later removed to Cadiz, when they continued this business several years. At about the age of seventeen Joel entered this store as a clerk, where he remained about eight years. In 1853 he removed to this farm, which consists of about 400 acres. This is one of the oldest farms in this county, and at one time was known as having the largest field of any farm between Canton and Hopkinsville. Mr. McKinney was married in 1872 to Miss Susan Crump. She was born in Trigg County. Six children have bless this union--two sons and four daughters.
