He is the eldest of a family of nine children born to William and Harriet (Gray) Boyd. The father was born in Halifax County, Va.; he died November 18, 1877, aged sixty-three. The mother was born in 1826, in Tennessee, and is now living in this precinct. John M., in 1869, secured a position as clerk in a warehouse at Canton, where he remained about one year. He then bought an interest in a saw-mill in Canton, and operated it about four years; after which, a grist-mill was attached and run about three years. He then engaged in merchandising about four years. In September, 1882, he removed to his present locality, having built a grist-mill that fall at a cost of about $6,000. Mr. Boyd was married, in 1871, to Miss Marion Hopson, of Trigg County. This union has been bless with two daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Boyd are members of the Baptist Church.
