MERRITT (deceased) was born January 17, 1800, in Williamson County, Tenn. In about 1823 he came to Todd County and practiced medicine and engaged in farming, in both of which he was eminently successful. He erected a very fine brick residence on this farm, coating from $8,000 to $10,000, and owned at the time of his death about 600 acres of land. He died July, 1883. The Doctor was first married in 1825 to Mrs. Fort, of Robinson County, Tenn. She died in 1829, leaving two children--William and Ann Eliza. By his second marriage he had two sons: Washington, a farmer, who died about six years ago, and Dr. R. Merritt, now practicing near Mayfield, Ky. Third marriage in 1836 to Penelope Hannum, a native of Russellville, Ky.,; this union has been blessed with six children: Henry C., now practicing law at Clarksville; Fisher H., now of Montgomery, Ala., engaged in forwarding and commission and planting; Rosa, now the widow of Charles Young; Montgomery, now an attorney of Henderson, Ky.; Philander L., now living at the homestead and having supervision of this farm; and Charlotte H., now wife of William Hannum, of Marysville, east Tenn.
