Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Spencer Co. ARTHUR F. WALLACE was born in 1842, in Barren County, Ky., a son of Augustus and Elizabeth (Clark) Wallace. On arriving at manhood he followed farming until he enlisted in 1861, in Company E, Third Kentucky Infantry, and served until 1865. He participated in the battles of Chickamauga, Mission Ridge and Resaca. April 16, 1865, while on board the "Sultana" about twelve miles above Memphis, the vessel exploded and almost instantaneously Mr. Wallace and about 3,000 others were thrown into the river. Nearly one-half were lost by drowning or scalding, Mr. Wallace being scalded all over the body. At that time he was being transferred from the Southern authorities, with whom he had been a prisoner six months. He was confined in the hospital at Memphis, later at Camp Chase and Louisville. April 9, 1874, he married Miss Sarah Hopewell, daughter of John B. and Elizabeth (Holsclaw) Hopewell. Mr. Hopewell's paternal grandfather, John Hopewell, was a soldier in the Revolution, as was also his maternal grandfather, Abner Roberts, and both were natives of Virginia. Mr. Hopewell was born in Spencer County, September 12, 1816, and his wife, September 23, 1816 in Garrard County. She died April 26, 1859. Mrs. Wallace was born July 20, 1845, in Spencer County, and she and her husband are members of the Presbyterian Church. Their children are John, Robert G., Maggie, Bessie M. and Arthur.
