Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. JOHN W. WHITE, deceased, was born at Bagdad, Shelby Co., Ky., in April 1834, and was the second son of Cary and Ann (Beckley) White, natives, respectively, of Jessamine and Shelby Counties. Robinson Beckley, the father of Mrs. Ann White, was one of the earliest settlers of Shelby County, while John W. White was descended from a family renowned for its wealth. Mr. White was educated at Georgetown College, but has always engaged in agricultural pursuits, and was regarded as remarkably well to do until he met with reverses in business. He married Miss Juliet Devine, one of the reigning belles of Shelby County, Ky., a lady of rare beauty and accomplishments, and a daughter of Nathan and Sallie (Rainey) Devine, who came to Kentucky from near Staunton, Va. Nathan Devine was of Irish descent, and moved from Montgomery to Shelby County about 1850, and died in 1863. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. White were born three children, Maud, Devine and Juliet, left orphans by the death of their father, who was a prominent Free Mason and reputable citizen. Mrs. White, a resident of Shelbyville, is the owner of a farm of 150 acres in Shelby County, and one of 147 acres in Henry County, near Eminence. She is a devout member of the Southern Presbyterian Church, of Shelbyville.
