Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. LEONARD A. WEAKLEY, attorney at law, Shelbyville, was born in Shelby County, Ky., February 25, 1846, and is a son of Calvin S. and Mary A. (Scarce) Weakley, both natives of Kentucky, who were married in 1840, and had born to them seven children. The mother died in 1856, but the father is still living. Leonard A. Weakley was the fifth child born to them, was reared on the farm six miles east of Shelbyville, and in early life attended the common schools. In 1863 he entered the school at Shelbyville under Prof. J. W. Dodd, who was afterward professor in Vanderbilt University, at Nashville, Tenn., and attended school one year. He then entered college at Georgetown, Ky., and graduated in June, 1866. He then taught school in connection with B. F. Duncan for five months, at Campbellsburg, Ky., and afterward taught a five months' term at Buffalo Lick, in Shelby County. In October, 1867, he entered the University of Virginia, graduated in law from that institution, and commenced the practice of his profession in Shelbyville, where and at which he has been constantly engaged ever since. In 1857 he became a member of the Baptist Church, at Clay Village, Ky., and in 1871 united with the Baptist Church, at Shelbyville, of which he is at present a deacon. He has always been a liberal contributor the church, and is regarded as a man of strictly moral character. June 23, 1875, he married Victoria Hammett, daughter of Henry and Ann (Thompson) Hammett, natives of Maryland. Previous to 1860 Henry Hammett moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and was for a number of years engaged in the hardware business. Afterward he moved to Baltimore, Md., where he died in 1885. He was the father of fourteen children--six daughters and eight sons. Mr. and Mrs. Weakley have had born to their union five living children: Anna E., Rowena, Calvin S., Hattie T. and Victorine. Mrs. Weakley is a member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Weakley is an earnest advocate of Sunday-schools and takes an active part in all church work. Politically he is a Baptist.
