Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. GEORGE W. SCOTT was born in Trigg County, Ky., July 30, 1835, the eldest son of a family of three sons and one daughter born to Willis and Selah Ann (Rucker) Scott. His father was a native of Shelby County, born December 21, 1806, was a well-to-do farmer, a member of the Baptist Church for about eighteen years, and was one of its firm supporters; was an ardent advocate of temperance, and noted for his many acts of charity. He died September 3, 1873. His mother is a native of Shelby County, born near Christiansburg June 13, 1810. She has been a member of the Baptist Church since her seventeenth year, and has always been a firm supporter of its principles. Subject's paternal grandfather, George Scott, a distant relative of Gen. Winfield Scott, was a native of Pennsylvania. He came to Kentucky in 1787 and settled on a farm near Taylorsville, where he was also engaged in selling goods, and was the first to sell merchandise in Shelby County. He died in 1825. His maternal grandfather was a native of Woodford County, born about 1784, was one of the first settlers of Kentucky and died in 1811. The maternal grandmother of our subject, was Lucy Eastes, was a native of Bedford County, Va., born in 1783, came to Kentucky with her husband in 1804, and died March 31, 1865. George W. Scott passed his life with his father on the farm until August, 1861, when he enlisted as a private, in the Federal Army, Company F, Sixth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry commanded by Col. Walter C. Whitaker, now brigadier general of Louisville. He participated in the battles of Shiloh, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Stone River, Dalton, Kenesaw and Marietta, Ga., and many minor ones. He fought gallantly in defense of his country, and was honorably discharged at Louisville, Ky., January 5, 1865. He was united in marriage, May 19, 1870, with Susan M. Walker, an estimable lady of Anderson County, daughter of Hon. Randall Walker, and two sons and two daughters blessed their union: Walker S., born August 7, 1871; Ann E., born August 17, 1874; Bettie J., born February 28, 1878, and Mortie R., born September 1, 1881. Politically Mr. Scott was an old line Whig, but since the organization of the Republican party has cast his ballot in its behalf, and is an ardent advocate of its principles. He has a well cultivated farm of 330 acres in a high state of cultivation, which he successfully manages, and is justly recognized as one of Shelby County's enterprising and prominent citizens.
