Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. JOHN S. RUSSELL, a native of Shelby County, Ky., was born February 29, 1828, the fourth son of a family of six sons and three daughters born to George and Mary (Churchwell) Russell. George Russell was a native of Prince William County, Va., came to Kentucky when fourteen years of age, and settled on a farm in Shelby County, where he resided until his death, which occurred about 1867; he served in the war of 1812 under Gen. James Whittaker. His widow, who was a native of Kentucky, died in 1872. John S. Russell remained with his father on the farm until his twenty-first year, when he engaged in farming for himself, which he has since successfully continued, and has a well cultivated farm of 205 acres eight miles and a half from Shelbyville; he also deals in stock. In February, 1858, he was united in marriage with Sarah E. Jones, a native of Shelby County. Two sons have blessed this union: James W., born September 30, 1862, and Charles H., born October 3, 1864.
