HERMAN ROTHCHILD was born in Wurtemberg, Germany, May 31, 1812, the second son born to Samuel and Caroline Rothchild, natives of Wurtemberg. Samuel was born in 1777, was a well-to-do farmer, and died in 1836. In early life Herman began agricultural pursuits, and coming to America in 1851, settled on the farm of 400 acres where he now resides, in Shelby County, and is widely known as a successful farmer and stock grower. In 1833 he married Barbara Ochs, a native of Germany, and the birth of two sons and two daughters followed their union: Abraham, Samuel, Bertha and Estol. Mrs. Rothchild died in 1846, and in October, 1847, Mr. Rothchild married Estol Ochs, a native of Germany. Three sons and one daughter blessed this union: Joseph, Louis, Henry M. and Cora.
