Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. GEORGE W. RIELY, a resident of Shelbyville, was born in Shelby County, Ky., January 23, 1814, and is a son of John an Jane (Middleton) Riely, natives of Virginia and of Irish descent. They were married about 1795, and about 1805 moved to what is now Shelby County, Ky. They had born to their union eight children--five daughters and three sons. George W. was the last child born to them, and is now the only survivor of the family. He was reared on the farm, and received his education at Shelbyville. His occupation has been farming and fruit growing from boyhood, at which he has been very successful. He has a fine farm well improved and a part in a high state of cultivation, all of which he has obtained by his industry and perseverance, as he started in life with nothing. He has always been a liberal contributor to all charitable organizations and also to the church. He has a large estate, which at his death (as he has willed) will go as a trust for the education of young men and women. In 1878 he was appointed superintendent and secretary of the Grove Hill Cemetery at Shelbyville, which positions he still holds. November 30, 1841, he married Sarah A. Grantham, daughter of William and Alice (Carter) Grantham, of Jefferson County, Va. To this union was born one son, William W., but he lived only six months. Mrs. Riely died October 25, 1842, a little less than one year after her marriage. Mr. Riely has never since married, and, although at the advanced age of seventy-three years he still is in prime health. Politically he is a Republican. He has for many years been a member of the Presbyterian Church, in which he is an elder. His wife was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
