Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. G. I. McDAVITT was born in Shelby County, Ky., April 2, 1840. At the age of four years he went with his father to Indiana and remained until 1857, returning in that year to Shelby County, Ky., where he still resides. His parents were George and Linny (Nolan) McDavitt, natives also of Shelby County. His grandfather, James McDavitt, was a native of Virginia, a member of the militia of that State; moved to Kentucky in 1796, and settled in Shelby County, where for many years he was postmaster at Camden. Our subject was educated in the common schools and has always followed the pursuits of the farm. During the civil war he served under Capt. Robert Cockham for two months. He married, October 31, 1865, Sarah Newland, daughter of James and Susan (Ford) newland, of Kentucky. Three children have blessed their union: Sidney, Susan and James. Mr. McDavitt owns 140 acres of well improved land, and is one of the foremost farmers of Shelby County. He is not a member of any church. Politically he is a Democrat.
