MADDOX is a native of Shelby County, Ky., born March 21, 1825, and is the eldest son of Thomas G. and Cynthia (Ford) Maddox, also natives of Shelby County. The paternal grandfather of Matthew W., Wilson Maddox, was born in Virginia, but who came to Kentucky. He was for many years a companion of Daniel Boone, and was married in Boonesboro, his wife having come from New Jersey. Spencer Ford, the maternal grandfather of Matthew W. Maddox, was a native of South Carolina, and also an early settler of Shelby County, Ky. Thomas G. Maddox was drafted during the war of 1812 to help fill the ranks at New Orleans, but the fight took place before his muster-in. He died in January, 1875, and his widow in December, 1880, each aged about eighty-three years. Matthew W. Maddox was reared a farmer, and was educated in the county schools. In October, 1859, he married Miss Amelia Torbitt, a native of Henry County, and daughter of Charles and Nancy (Phillips) Torbitt, natives of Woodford County, Ky., and Virginia. Eddie C. Maddox, born April 4, 1869, is the only living child born to this union. Mr. Maddox is the owner of 170 acres in Marshall's Precinct, Shelby County, which he keeps under a high state of cultivation.
