Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. MRS. MARTHA S. MADDOX is a native of Shelby County, and a daughter of Thomas and Lucy (Floyd) McGaughey. Her grandfather, Col. John McGaughey, was a native of Ireland, and a prominent officer in the Revolutionary war; his wife was a Miss Mary Simpson. They were among the first settlers of Shelbyville, Ky., their son, Thomas, was the first male child born there, and was engaged in mercantile pursuits before the age of railroads, when goods purchased by him in Philadelphia were conveyed thence over the mountains in large covered wagons. Her grandfather on her mother's side was Levi Floyd, of English descent, who came from Pennsylvania, and settled in Woodford County, Ky. He was related to Col. John Floyd, one of the pioneers of Kentucky, and to William Floyd, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He married Miss Mary Boston, of Baltimore, Md. Mrs. Maddox graduated at W. F. Hill's Female College, of Shelbyville, August 21, 1854, she was married to James W. Maddox, a well-to-do farmer of Shelby County. Two children blessed this union: Mary and Maria. Mr. Maddox possessed sterling qualities of mind and heart. He died April 21, 1881, deeply lamented by his friends and neighbors. Mrs. Maddox owns 300 acres of well improved land, beautifully situated on the headwaters of Six Mile Creek, one of the tributaries of the Kentucky River. This farm is a portion of the large tract familiarly known as the Daniel Boone tract. She is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
