Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. JOE A. LOGAN, farmer, was born in Scott County, Ky., April 22, 1848, a son of Rev. J. H. and Mary (Venable) Logan. The father was born in Shelby County; was a Presbyterian preacher, and pastor of Bethel Church in Scott County, Ky., for sixteen years; he died in 1851. He was a gentleman of pleasing manners, and a great favorite with all who knew him. His father, Alexander, a native of Virginia, immigrated to Kentucky in quite an early day, settled in Shelby County, and followed farming all his life. Our subject has always been engaged in farming and stock raising. He owns a nice farm in the Mulberry District, and pays special attention to the raising of Cotswold sheep, Berkshire hogs and Shorthorn cattle. He also raises hemp, wheat and tobacco in abundance. He was educated at Washington and Lee University, Virginia, during the presidency of Gen. R. E. Lee, immediately after the war. On October 21, 1875, he married Maggie Crockett, of Shelby County, daughter of John E. and Lucy (Duvall) Crockett. Five children have blessed this union: Lucy C., Mary E., Josephine I., Robert C. and Shelby V. Mrs. and Mrs. Logan are members of the Presbyterian Church. He has been a member of the Kentucky State Grange for a number of years, and now holds the office of overseer. The farm upon which Mr. Logan now lives is a portion of the same one upon which his great-grandfather (Venable) settled when he first came from Virginia.
