Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. JEPTHA LAYSON was born in 1834 in Pike County, Mo. His parents, Samuel and Amelia (Hibler) Layson, were natives of Bourbon County, Ky., but their parents came from Virginia. The Laysons were probably of French, the Hiblers of German origin. When Jeptha was but a child he moved with his mother to Bourbon County, Ky., where he was reared. In 1852 he moved to Shelbyville, where he engaged in the furniture, building and undertaking business, and was largely instrumental in building up the town of Shelbyville. He was the builder and for many years the owner of Layson's Hall, the only hall of any consequence in the town. In March, 1875, he moved to a farm, where he has since followed agriculture and stock raising, and owns 481 acres of very valuable, well improved land. He joined the Christian Church in 1850, and has since been a member. In 1869 Mr. Layson married Miss Sallie Thomas, of Shelby County, a daughter of Wilson Thomas, who was born eighty-one years ago in Shelby County, and who was an extensive farmer. The Thomas family came from Virginia to Kentucky when the country was a wilderness. Mrs. Crawford, of the Thomas family, is still living, and a member of Mr. Layson's household. She is the widow of Rev. William Crawford, a distinguished minister of the Christian Church. Mr. Layson's farm is one of the most celebrated in the State, and is called "Station farm," it having been the place where Squire Boone established a fort and station, traces of which are still seen. It was on this farm, too, that Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston was married to Miss Hancock. The writer was shown some remarkable Indian relics, which were found on the Layson farm, and which have been on the exhibition in Louisville and New Orleans, and for which they have had many offers. Collins' History speaks of this historic place. To Mr. and Mrs. Layson have been born two children: Wilson T. and Edwin C.
