Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. JOHN T. HASTINGS was born in Scott County, Ky., April 7, 1839, and is the only son of John D. and Frances B. (Lloyd) Hastings, natives of Shelby County, and born respectively, September 13, 1804, and March 18, 1818. John D. Hastings was a pioneer stage driver, and for many years ran from Frankfort to Louisville before the days of turnpikes. John T. Hastings was taken from Scott to Shelby County in 1844 by his parents, and was educated at Shelby College. He began the grocery business on Sixth Street, Shelbyville, in October, 1860, and in 1864 joined partnership with A. Hollenbach, continuing in business with him until January, 1877, since when he has been alone with the exception of three years in partnership with William Randolph. In June, 1861, he married Miss Mary E. Lancaster, daughter of Simpson Lancaster, an early sheriff to Shelby County. The seven children born to this marriage are named Fannie W., Maud E., William Pettit, John T., Mary A., Harry L. and Howard L. Mr. Hastings is an Odd Fellow in high standing, having passed all the chairs of the lodge, and is also a member of the Baptist Church.
