Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. JOHN C. COOPER, proprietor of the Shelby County Sentinel, was born in 1833, in Lincoln County, Ky. His father, George B. Cooper, a native of Virginia, immigrated to Pulaski County, Ky., where he was three times elected to the Legislature. Susan Lee, the mother of John C. Cooper, wife of George B., was closely related to the famous Robert E. Lee. John C. Cooper came to Shelby County in 1877, and is now one of the joint editors of the Shelby County Sentinel. Mr. T. F. Poynter is associate editor. The paper was established in 1843 by Henry F. Middleton. It is the only Democratic paper in the county and has a circulation of from 1,800 to 2,000. Mr. Cooper read law with Judge Robinson, and was admitted to the bar at Sanford, Ky., in 1861. He was elected to the Legislature in 1861, and served two terms; he was also county attorney for eight years. In January, 1878, he began practicing law with Judge M. T. Carpenter, at Shelbyville, and they bought the paper together. Mr. Carpenter died in 1885. Mr. Cooper was twice elected Grand Master of the K. of H., serving two years. In 1861 he married Miss Pauline Karr, of Madison County, Ky., and they have four children: Mrs. Henry Winslow, of Carrollton, Fannie, Emma and Thomas. Mr. Cooper is a Mason; politically he is a Democrat.
