Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. JAMES W. BIRD, a native of Shelby County, was born March 3, 1837. He is the fourth son born to the union of Philemon and Sallie (Hanna) Bird, natives respectively of Scott and Shelby Counties. His grandfather, Lee Bird, came to Kentucky about 1822, and settled near Cropper's Station. Philemon Bird was born April 1, 1801, and died May 10, 1876. J. W. Bird's maternal grandfather, Thomas Hanna, was a native of Virginia. James W. Bird was reared on the farm, was educated at the common schools, and also attended one year's course at Giltner's College, Eminence, Ky. He was united in marriage, in 1870, to Mary Perdue, a native of Shelby County, and daughter of James and Elizabeth (Harrell) Perdue. She has borne him five children: Maggie K., Sallie, Joseph G., Lizzie K. and Mary I. His farm of 200 acres in Marshall's Precinct, Shelby County, is a model.
