Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. JAMES G. BAYNE, second son of James and Mary (French) Bayne, was born in Shelby County, January 2, 1817. His parents were born in Virginia, his father being a son of George Bayne, of that State. Our subject's two grandfathers, George Bayne and William French, immigrated to Kentucky at an early day, and settled in Shelby County on adjoining farms. James received his education at the common schools. He was for a number of years engaged as a clerk in a store. In September, 1838, he married Mary Baskett of Shelby County, daughter of James and Mildred (Shepherd) Baskett. He then began farming and distilling, and for many years manufactured a very popular manufactured a very popular brand of whisky [sic], widely known as "Bayne's Best." In 1874 he opened a general store in Bagdad, and continued to do a successful business until 1882, then, having become tired of mercantile life, he built a large mill in Bagdad. It has all of the latest improvements, roller process, etc. The style of the mill firm is J. G. Bayne & Sons, the latter managing the mill. The firm does a flourishing business, and ships flour to all neighboring towns. Mr. Bayne also has farming done, and buys cattle, mules and sheep. His wife died July 1, 1878. She was a dutiful wife, a wise mother, and a consistent Christian woman. Eight children blessed this marriage, seven of whom are living. The eldest child, William J., married Fanny Barnett, of Shelby County, and has three children: Charles, Mary and Mattie; he resides in Kansas City. Sallie married D. W. Owens, formerly of Henry County, and they now live one mile from Bagdad on a beautiful Shelby County farm. Mattie married J. T. Moore, of Shelby, and has two children: Valeria and Mary. James C. married Mary. James C. married Mary Addams, of Cynthiana, Ky. Lucy married William Barnett, of Shelby. The other two sons, Samuel R. and Robert L. are not married. James, Samuel and Robert are partners in the mill.
