Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. JOHN R. ANDERSON was born in Oldham County, Ky., October 13, 1829, and is the sixth child of the seven children born to Charles and Mary (Smith) Anderson, natives of Virginia. The maternal grandfather, Smith, came from Virginia to Shelby County, Ky., in 1815, and settled on Hemp Ridge, where he died in 1827 or 1828. Charles Anderson settled in Oldham County in 1818 and died in 1831, at the age of fifty-two years. John R. Anderson was reared on the home farm, attended Funk's College, LaGrange, three years and then returned to the farm, and in October, 1852, married Miss Lydia J. Woodsmall, born October 7, 1831, a daughter of James and Sarah (Mount) Woodsmall, all of Oldham County and of Virginia descent. To this marriage three children have been born: Mary E., Charles W. who died August 29, 1883, and Sarah E. In 1883 Mr. Anderson bought John Troutman's farm of 172 acres on Fox Run Creek, one mile and a half south of Eminence, in Shelby County, where he now resides.
