GEORGE E. PREWITT, lawyer; Georgetown, Ky.; born in Scott County, Ky.,
April 14, 1827, near to what is now Kinkead Station, S.S.R.; is the fourth
son of Robert C. and Elizabeth S. Prewitt, who, in the year 1835, emigrated
to Lincoln County, Mo., where the subject of our sketch resided until he
was twenty-two, receiving his education principally in a private school
taught by Rev. Wilson Cunningham, a Presbyterian minister of great worth
and learning.  His father, Robert C. Prewitt, was born in Fayette County,
Ky., on a farm, in 1795, and his mother, who maiden name was Elgin, in
Maryland, in 1793, who, with her parents, emigrated to, and settled in
Scott County, Ky., when she was a child seven years old, and who is still
living in Missouri in the ninetieth year of her age.  His said father,
before he had attained his eighteenth year, in the fall of 1812, joined
Capt. John Edmondson's Company of Kentucky volunteers and was present and
took part in the disastrous battle of the River Raisin (or Frenchtown)
and was then taken prisoner by the British and Indians, and suffered many
hardships and indignities before he was exchanged.  He was married in 1818,
and died in 1850.  In 1849 George E. Prewitt returned to Kentucky, and in
1851 began the study of law with Richard Apperson Sr., of Mt. Sterling,
but married and returned to Missouri before completing his legal studies,
and was admitted to the bar in that State in 1852; he came to Georgetown
in 1854, and was the same year admitted to practice in all the courts of
this State, to which he has since devoted his time and talents; he served
in the capacity of City Judge of Georgetown for one term, and as Master
Commissioner of the Scott Circuit Court from 1856 to 1862.
