Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Rockcastle County Mason C. Miller, county clerk of Rockcastle County, Ky., was born in Mount Vernon, same county, July 12, 1836. His father, Mason C. Miller, Sr., a native of Jessamine County, Ky., was born about 1800, and moved to Mount Vernon, Rockcastle County, at an early date, where he was engaged in mercantile pursuits until his death. His wife was Elizabeth (Stigall) Miller, and they were the parents of six children, viz: James F., Milton J., Mary, Elizabeth, Georgiana and Mason C. The parents were both members of the Christian Church. Mason C. Miller, subject of this sketch, was reared and educated in Mount Vernon. In early life he followed farming, and about 1858 he was engaged in merchandising at Mount Vernon, which occupation he pursued until the out-break of the war. He then entered the Federal army as First Lieutenant of Company B, Fourth Kentucky Infantry, under command of Col Speed S. Fry, and served twelve months. He then joined the Fourteenth Kentucky Cavalry as First Lieutenant of Company B, served his term of enlistment, and was discharged at Maysville, Ky. He then returned to Mount Vernon, where he again engaged in merchandising and continued the same until 1882, when he was elected county clerk of Rockcastle County, served one term and was re-elected in 1886. November 15, 1856, he married Miss Paulina J. Owens, a daughter of Wilson Owens, of Rockcastle County. Mrs. Miller died in 1866, leaving two children, James W. and Emma. In 1867 Mr. Miller married Miss Louisa Oreer, a daughter of John D. Oreer, of Montgomery County, Ky. Six children have blessed their union, viz: Georgiana, Mason C., Eliza, John D., Bessie and Lula. His second wife died May 15, 1885, and April 22, 1886, Mr. Miller married Elizabeth Hays, a daughter of Alfred Hauk, of Rockcastle County. Mr. Miller is a member of the Christian Church, of the F.& A.M., and also of the I.O.O.F. Politically he is a Republican.
