Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Rockcastle County William M. Fish was born in Rockcastle County, Ky., November 16, 1828. His father, William Fish, a native of North Carolina, but of English descent, was the eldest son of Thomas and Winnifred (Burney) Fish, natives of England. William Fish, father of our subject, was a farmer in Rockcastle County, Ky. all his life, and was a man of considerable prominence in political and social affairs. About 1820 he was made sheriff of the county. He also served as a Colonel in the State militia. His wife, Annie, was born in Lincoln County, Ky. and was a daughter of Nathaniel Logan, of Irish descent. They had four children, viz: Sarah J., Harriet, William M. and John T.. He and his wife lived to a good old age, and died in Rockcastle County, members of the Christian Church. Col. William Fish had been married before he married Annie Logan,--married Sallie Maret, and had four children by his first wife, viz: Winnifred, Margaret, Stephen G. and Burnetta. William M. Fish was reared and educated in Rockcastle County, Ky. and from boyhood has devoted the greater part of his time to agricultural pursuits, owning a fine farm in Rockcastle County. In 1862 he was elected county court clerk at Mount Vernon, and the following year was appointed Deputy United States Marshal, holding both offices for about three months. He resigned and was appointed Internal Revenue Assistant Assessor, and held this office for a number of years. He then held no office until 1873, when he was elected circuit clerk, to which office he has been re-elected once in six years ever since. His political preference is the Republican party, and he has always taken an active part in politics. December 8, 1856, he married Talitha T., a daughter of William and Charity (Lawrence) French, of Rockcastle County, Ky. Six children have blessed their union, viz: Mary L., Thomas J., Hattie J., Jones P., Charity A. and Marion G. Mr. Fish is a member of the F. & A.M. fraternity, and has been since the year 1857.
