Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Pulaski County John Silvers, deputy county clerk of Pulaski County, Ky, was born in Mason County, MO, March 22, 1845, and is a son of John and Polly (Shadoan) Silvers. John Silvers, SR, was born in Pulaski County in 1809, was a carpenter by trade and also engaged in agricultural pursuits. He died December 10, 1870, having been a strict member of the Baptist Church for many years. He was a son of William Silvers, a native of Virginia, who was an early settler in Pulaski County, Ky. Polly (Shadoan) Silvers was born in Virginia and settled on the Cumberland river in Pulaski County with her parents when a child. She is a daughter of William Shadoan, who was a farmer all his life. John Silvers is of Irish extraction on his father's side and French on his mother's. He settled in Pulaski County, Ky, with his parents in 1858; receiving his education in the common schools and at the Masonic College, Somerset, Ky.. September 1, 1861, he enlisted in the Federal army, Company C, Third Kentucky Infantry, under command of Col. Thomas E. Bramlette and Capt. D.H. Denton. He served until November, 1862, when he was appointed regimental bugler, and acted in that capacity until October 13, 1864, when he was mustered out at Louisville, Ky. He at once returned to Pulaski County, and in March, 1865, enlisted in a company of State troops, remaining until July of the same year. He was engaged in farming and teaching school from 1865 to 1871. In the later year he became salesman in a general store in Somerset, where he remained until 1875, when he accepted a situation with Davis, Trabue & Co., wholesale dry goods merchants of Louisville, Ky., where he was engaged until 1878. He then returned to Somerset and was deputy county clerk from 1878 to 1882, and at the August election in 1882 was elected jailer and served one term of four years, immediately after becoming deputy county clerk under John S. May, and is now acting in that capacity. December 20, 1866, he married Charity Sloan, of Pulaski County, Ky., a daughter of James and Sarah (Hall) Sloan. Five children have been born to their union, Mary A. (now Mary A. Kerby), Sarah B., Isadora, William E. and Charles E. Mr. Silvers is a member of the I.O.O.G. fraternity, of which he has been Noble Grand. Is also a member of the G.A.R., holding the position of officer of the day of C.A. Zachary Post, No. 20, department of Kentucky, and assistant inspector of the department of Kentucky. In politics he is a Republican.
