Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Pulaski County Hon. W.H. Pettus was born in Garrard County, KY, September 9, 1827, a son of Richard G. and Nancy (Adams) Pettus. Richard G. Pettus was born in Virginia in 1803, and settled in Lincoln County, KY, with his parents in 1806. He was a farmer and stock-raiser all his life, and died December 5, 1837, having been a strict member of the Baptist Church for many years. He was a son of Joseph Pettus, who was a native of Louisa County, VA, and was a farmer and school teacher. Mrs. Nancy Pettus was born in Garrard County, KY, a daughter of Daniel and Lydia (Williams) Adams. W.H. Pettus received his early education in his native county, and subsequently attended school at Georgetown College five months. In 1853 he moved to Lincoln County, KY, and two years later settled in Pulaski County, where he has since resided. In 1862 he was elected county judge of Pulaski County, and served one term. He read law, and in 1864 he was admitted to the bar. In 1869 he was elected to the Legislature, and while serving in that body was an advocate of the bill granting the charter for completion of the Cincinnati Southern Railroad; he also took an active part in the re-organization of the Kentucky school system, and was a member of the insurance committee who reported the present insurance law. In 1878 and 1879 he served as a member of the first railroad commission in Kentucky. In February, 1850, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth K. Hutchinson. They are the parents of eight children, seven of whom are living, viz: Richard H., Walter B., Nannie E., Mary E., Lillie L., Sallie B. and William A. Mrs. Elizabeth Pettus died in 1870, a member of the Christian Church. In November, 1870, Mr. Pettus married Mary B. Milton, of Fayette County, KY, a daughter of E. Milton. Two children have blessed this union, one living, Eden. Mrs. Pettus is a member of the Presbyterian Church. Judge Pettus is a member of the Baptist Church, a Master Mason, and a Democrat. He has a farm near Somerset, and practices his profession in all the courts in the county.
