Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Oldham Co. FIELDING W. SMITH, born in Oldham County, December 26, 1829, is a son of Earley and Elizabeth (Bates) Smith, natives of Virginia. His father came to Kentucky in 1828, and located in Oldham County for one year, then moved to a farm four miles south of Louisville, where he remained until 1862, moving then to Louisville, where he died about 1872; his wife died in 1867, and both were members of the Primitive Baptist Church. Our subject is the second of two sons and six daughters, passed his early life on a farm, and has always followed agricultural pursuits, now having a farm of 185 acres in a high state of cultivation on the San Hill and Brownsboro Turnpike. October 31, 1850, he married Sarah M. Carpenter, of Oldham County, daughter of Abel and Susan (Smith) Carpenter. Mrs. Smith died October 23, 1886, a member of the Christian Church, and the mother of two sons and two daughters: James L., Lee W., ELiza J. and Amanda L.
