Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 1887, Oldham Co. JOHN P. ROSS was born in Monroe County, Va., in 1818, a son of John and Nancy A. (Ellis) Ross, the latter a daughter of William Ellis, of Virginia. The Ross family is of Scotch origin. Our subject was reared on a farm in his native State, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits until 1867. He then moved to Kentucky, followed the same vocation, and now owns about 700 areas of land in Oldham County. December 31, 1840, he married Rebecca Johnson, daughter of Barnabas Johnson, of Monroe County, Va., who served in the militia on behalf of the Confederacy during the civil war. The Johnsons are among the first and best families of Virginia. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Ross were named as follows: Cornelius P., Newton B., Fletcher M. (deceased), William Asberry (deceased), John W. (deceased), James F., Elbert C., Pemberton J., Lafayette W. and Emma J. Mr. Ross is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
